Distraction Osteogenesis

Distraction osteogenesis, also called callus distraction, callotasis, osteodistraction, is a surgical process used for the reconstruction of skeletal deformities and for the lengthening of bones. The bone is surgically (with a corticotomy) split in two segments (therefore creating a bone fracture) and the two ends of the bone are gradually moved apart (distraction phase) slowly enough that new bone can form in the gap. When the aimed length has been reached, a consolidation phase follows. The uniqueness and value of distraction osteogenesis lie in its ability to simultaneously expand both the bone volume and the surrounding soft tissues.
